Part of the Kingdom Vol II
a documentary investigation of the LGBTQIA+ experience within affirming churches
Two years ago Mak Cofer, a student at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, produced an award-winning documentary on the LGBTQIA+ student experience at John Brown. The documentary includes interviews with students and even a (in my perspective) rather painful interview with the university president.
This year, Mak has produced a follow-up documentary investigation of the LGBTQIA+ experience within affirming church atmospheres. Mak chose as subjects two congregations in particular: a wonderful Episcopal congregation in Siloam Springs, and then ours, Good Shepherd Lutheran in Fayetteville.
Each documentary clocks in at about 30 minutes in length. They’re really well done, and both screened this weekend at the Pride festival in Siloam Springs.
I commend them both to you if you’d like to see some great student documentary work illustrating the story of what it’s like for LGBTQIA+ students to be in conservative Christian university settings, and a few testimonies about the LGBTQIA experience in affirming churches. And for more information, here’s a student interview and article about the project.
