Back in 2002 I started blogging at Blogger. I named the blog “Lutheran Confessions” for the double entendre. The Lutheran confessions are the documents that define the Lutheran Church as a religious movement, but also, I’m a Lutheran and these are my “confessions.”
I’ve gone through many phases of discomfort with the name “Lutheran.” For one, Luther himself didn’t want the movement named after him. And also there are some/many Lutherans who claim the name and mean something very different than I do when I call myself a Lutheran.
Nevertheless, I’ve decided to get back to the name as the title for this space here at Substack, at least for a couple of reasons. First, because “All the Things” was a clunky Kantian reference that’s probably not even obvious to Kantians. Second, because I really just like the name Lutheran Confessions.
So that’s what it is going to be. Which means I’ll likely have to share a bit more about Lutherans than I’ve done thus far on the blog, and maybe even some stuff about the Lutheran confessions. And of course if you want to do some archaeological digging you can read the Lutheran Confessions (a site, I’d add, maintained by the “other” kind of Lutherans) for yourself, or the original 15 year run of posts at the Blogger Lutheran Confessions blog.
And since we’ve got a bit of community happening here in this space, maybe throw some questions or comments my way. Would love to know what your wonderments are these days.
Clint, since we're speaking of Lutherans and M. Luther by extension I would be interested in your thoughts about what Luther got really right and what you may think he got absolutely wrong. I'm fully aware of his later in life animosity toward Jews, so that can be skipped.
An appreciative reader;
